Life, Love, and The Pursuit of Free Throws
Life, Love, and The Pursuit of Free Throws

by Janette Rallison
(Anonymous, VA)

Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Free Throws is a very good book about two friends Josie and Cami who are both on the school basketball team. All of them are working very hard, because one of the girls from the team will get to play with Rebecca Lobo. Cami, who worships Rebecca, thinks it is very unfair that Josie is better than Cami, even though Cami has been playing longer. Josie couldn't care less. All she wants is to get the cutest guy in school to notice her. (Not when she falls down the escalator.)Too bad he seems to like Cami better. If you are a person who likes both, romance, humor, and basketball, you should definitely read this book. Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Free Throws is about 185 pages, but very exciting, so if you pick it up, keep reading!

Millicent Min, Girl Genius
Millicent Min, Girl Genius

by Lisa Yee
(Review by Kelsey, VA)

If you're interested in a book about an eleven year old girl who is going to be a senior in high school, this is the right book for you: Millicent Min, Girl Genius is looking forward to a great summer. Reading books in her tree house, taking a college poetry course, and relaxing with her grandma, Maddie. Her summer takes a turn for the worse! First, her mom signs her up for volleyball. She is shocked! A team sport, as if that's not bad enough, she has to tutor Stanford Wong (poster boy for Chinese geekdom)! No offense, but he's dumber then a box of rocks! All he cares about is basketball. One good point of her summer is she meets a new friend at volleyball, Emily. Emily doesn't know about Millicent's high I.Q. If Millicent keeps her High I.Q. a secret, maybe she can finally make a friend...right? To find out how Millicent's summer goes, read Millicent Min Girl Genius by: Lisa Yee. This is a great book for girls ages 9-13.I enjoyed reading about how Millicent used her brain to handle things. This book had a great ending! The author, Lisa Yee, used great detail to make this story a "never put down" book. I agree with the Kirkus Reviews, this book deserves an A+.

Reluctantly Alice
Reluctantly Alice

(Anonymous, VA)

    • I recently read an amazing book titled Reluctantly Alice. It’s not as long as you think. Actually its only 140 pages long for those of you who don't like long books. It’s more of a series, like Harry Potter. She starts out in 3rd grade and goes on until 7th grade. Parts of it are really interesting and parts are a little mushy just like any other book you would read. The girl who is the most important character has about the same amount of problems at home as she does in school. You know, bullies, friend trouble. When I read this I felt a similar connection between me and her. I bet if you read this to you'll feel a sudden connection, I know you will. The first day of 7th grade Alice finds out 7th grade is no party. Friend trouble makes everything better and worse. Bullies crush her spirit. Her dad and brother’s girlfriends are driving her insane by calling every second. She invited her teacher to a concert with her dad not knowing. But, all in all it’s been a pretty good day.

Mitten
Mitten

Author: Jan Brett
(Review by Patrick Carpenter, 11)
I really like the way Jan Brett draws the pictures of all the animals. She does a good job showing how the animals all squeeze into a little knit mitten and don't hurt each other. I also like it when Baba the grandmother looks at the mittens in the end of the book.

The Hat
The Hat

Author: Jan Brett
(Review by Erin Carpenter, 11)
I really like this book because the animals have so much fun with all the clothes. My mom reads it to me and my brother all the time and we like it. Hedgie the Hedgehog is funny and the animals all want to be like him and put a hat on with clothes. It is a good book for kids.

My Side of the Mountain
My Side of the Mountain

By Jean Craighead George
(Review by Jaqie - 13)

I would like to start this review by saying if you have not read this book; I highly, highly recommend it. Of all the books out there, this is one of my favorites.

It is a story of a boy named Sam; who grows tired of living in a crowded city with his 7 brothers and sisters, so he decides to run away from the bustling city streets to the Catskill Mountains in search of the historic Gribley farm. This book is so good because the author uses such description. The characters’ every action paints a clear picture in your mind. The book also has a memorable array of characters, from a beautiful falcon, to a hiding “bandit”, to a fearless weasel. This is a great book and beautifully demonstrates what it might just be like to live life in the wilderness.

Author: Carl Hiaasen
(review by Daniel - 11)

This is a book about standing up for what you believe. It starts when a boy, Roy Eberhardt, moves from Montana to Coconut Cove, Florida, and is less than enthusiastic about his new home. “Disney World is an armpit compared to Montana.” Then, one day while being bullied on the bus, he sees a strange running boy. When he tries to find out more, he meets a class clown, a sleepy policeman, an evil pancake-house tycoon, and some cute burrowing owls. Who says Florida’s an armpit? 5 stars.
